The Old Mill

The Stockdale Lumber Mill

Joseph Stockdale built a water powered grist mill and a saw mill on Cold Creek in 1824. The sawmill was rebuilt by John Williamson & Albert Graham, around 1867. It was one of the first turbine mills. They took the place of water wheels. Walter Twiddy purchased it in 1918. He operated the mill until 1948, when his son Richard and later his grandson Walter, took over. The dam was rebuilt by Walter Twiddy and Fred Cox. The sawmill last ran in 1989. It is believed to be the oldest sawmill in Ontario.
